The science of L-theanine

Matcha delivers a combination of L-theanine and Caffeine.

Let’s dive into some scientific research behind this powerful pairing 👇

A simple summary

This paper found that having both L-theanine and Caffeine together had greater cognitive effect than having just one of them by themselves.
This suggests that caffeine and L-theanine are better together.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the effects of caffeine and L-theanine both alone and in combination on cerebral blood flow, cognition and mood

"l-theanine modulates or potentiates the effects of caffeine where a number of effects were evident following a combination of 250 mg L-theanine and 150 mg caffeine that were not apparent when each treatment was administered alone; these included increased speed on several tasks, improved semantic memory and increased alertness. Other studies have employed lower doses of L-theanine (~100 mg) and caffeine (~50 mg) to explore these effects (Einother et al. 2010; Kelly et al. 2008;
Owen et al. 2008), providing support for the findings from
studies of higher doses, in terms of improved accuracy
(Einother et al. 2010; Kelly et al. 2008; Owen et al. 2008)
and speed (Einother et al. 2010; Owen et al. 2008) on tasks
of attention, and improvements to measures of memory
(Owen et al. 2008)."

The science of B-Vitamins

B-vitamins are mood, brain and metabolism boosting super ingredients

Let’s dive into why coffee drinkers are potentially at risk of deficiency of these essential vitamins 👇
Caffeine is known as a diuretic substance, meaning it causes our body to urinate more. As a result it is quite common to feel dehydrated from coffee, and is why many people enjoy a glass of water alongside their flat whites.
B-Vitamins (such as Vitamins B6, B9 & B12) are in a class of vitamins known as water-soluble vitamins. This means they dissolve in water and are not stored in the body, requiring regular intake to maintain adequate levels.
B vitamins, particularly B6, folate (B9), and B12, play a crucial role in serotonin synthesis and overall mood regulation
Through caffeines diuretic effect, therefore when we urinate more we are at risk of losing B-Vitamins in the process. Replenishing them is important for our cognitive function, our metabolism, and mood*
